Iran Pavilion Expo 2015 Milan

A Prefabricated Building Inspired by Iranian Bazaar

The main challenge in this project was designing a modular structure for the pavilion on an elongated site plan in the expo 2015 in Milan. The pavilion aims to demonstrate Iranian culture and architecture in the expo and would include several galleries, a restaurant, a café, and a  semi-opened amphitheater. For this purpose, I investigated different structures in the historical architecture of Iran and have found the structure of traditional Iranian “Bazaar” the best choice for inspiration.

A bazaar is a marketplace consisting of multiple small stalls or shops. Bazaars in the Middle East were traditionally located in vaulted or covered streets that were typically constructed in a linear pattern, had doors on each end, and served as a city’s central marketplace.

My design for Iran Pavilion in Expo Milan 2015 is reminding the modular structure of arches and various transition techniques in historical Persian bazaars. Arches join together to build a harmonic structure and façade. The repetitive arch modules would make it possible for the structural components to be prefabricated, which is an important option for building pavilions in a very short time in the expo.  Also, I have applied several mini-concepts for designing the façade of the pavilion. For example, walls are made of prefabricated GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) panels with filler and hollow bricks patterns and stained glasses would present amazing interplaying with light and shade.
